Donald Trump has once again announced he would urge FIFA to pull upcoming World Cup matches from a designated city based on that city's governance, with Massachusetts becoming the latest such city to receive such warnings from the White House. Moreover, Trump indicated he would contemplate comparable measures against Los Angeles for the 2028 Summer Games due to possible safety issues.

While Trump does not have official jurisdiction to personally cancel either event, he may exert influence the organizing committees managing each tournament to shift locations.

Context of Remarks

His remarks were made during a media briefing with Argentina's leader Milei, who was present in the presidential residence following the disclosure of a massive bailout for the Latin American nation. At the end of the gathering, a media member asked Trump about a recent unauthorized gathering in Boston where authorities were attacked and a patrol car was set on fire. The reporter also asked if such events could lead to the removal of hosting duties for the 48-team soccer tournament.

“We could take them away,” the former president said about the World Cup matches, scheduled to be held at the Foxborough venue. “She is ineffective … she’s extremist, and activists are occupying areas of the city. That is a pretty big claim, don't you think?”

Street takeovers, a social media-driven phenomenon where large crowds assemble on city streets during nighttime to conduct vehicular acrobatics, have been a ongoing nuisance in metropolitan centers since the Covid-19 pandemic closures. Latest incidents have escalated into violence in Massachusetts, including Boston. However, these occurrences are generally not seen as tied to any particular political ideology.

“When a city is doing a bad job, and I perceive exist unsafe conditions, I'd call the organization's president, who is outstanding, and suggest we should relocate it to an alternate venue,” he stated on Tuesday. “And he would do that. He wouldn’t love to do it, but he'd agree. Without hesitation, he’d do it.”

Political Connections

FIFA President has been open his attempts to be visibly associated with the US leader prior to the upcoming World Cup, set to be staged in 11 cities across the US along with two in Canada and three in the southern neighbor. During the event, Trump’s response to a query about the Massachusetts city included a parallel statement regarding the upcoming Summer Games.

“When I thought LA was failing to be adequately ready, I would relocate it to an alternate venue as needed,” he remarked. “Regarding that event I’d probably have to get a alternative approval, but we'd do that.”

Any approval Trump refers to would have to come through the International Olympic Committee (IOC). The president, she, was selected to her post in spring and has yet to meet publicly with Trump, though she said that she would like a discussion with Trump at some point.

He also questioned the state's leader Newsom’s management of the blazes, saying that a parallel incident could result in the removal of the event.

“When the governor refuses to cooperate, we are going to have to be very tough,” the former president said.

The warning was just as unambiguous for Boston.

“The city should improve their situation,” Trump stated. “That’s all my message.”
