Kristi Noem Visits Portland ICE Center Amid MAGA Influencers

The South Dakota governor, currently serving as the DHS secretary, inspected the Immigration and Customs Enforcement (ICE) office in the city of Portland on this week. During her visit, she witnessed a small protest outside, which stands in stark contrast to the dramatic "siege" claimed by former President Donald Trump.

Escorted by MAGA Personalities

Governor Noem was joined by a set of right-wing figures who were whisked from the airport to the ICE office in her official convoy. DHS has recently produced escalating digital updates showing federal personnel carrying out immigration raids and firing tear gas at crowds.

Gathering Outside

Local law enforcement cleared the street outside the facility in the Portland's waterfront district before the Noem's visit. Several individuals, among them one wearing a costume of a chicken and another as a sea creature, were maintained behind barriers.

A song played loudly from a demonstration site nearby, with lyrics referencing Donald Trump and allegations. One protester called out to a official camera operator recording from the top of the building, questioning whether the homeland security had been renamed the "information ministry".

Press Coverage

Journalists from mainstream publications were also kept at the security perimeter outside, while the partisan influencers in Noem’s entourage—three right-wing influencers—shared social media updates of the secretary leading federal officers in a prayer session inside, delivering a motivational speech, and instructing a individual of the militia to "Get ready".

Legal and Political Context

The secretary has supported the Trump's assertions that the handful of individuals—who have gathered in their dozens outside the ICE facility since the summer, including one in an amphibian suit—are "extremists" who have placed the office "in a state of siege", making the deployment of federal troops critical.

But, on Saturday, a federal judge in the city blocked the former president's effort to federalize the state's guard, stating that the president’s assertions that the largely peaceful city was "burning to the ground" were "not based on reality".

A day later, the same judge, Karin Immergut—who was appointed to the judiciary by Trump—extended the decision to prevent National Guard troops from other states from being deployed in Portland. This occurred after he answered to her previous decision by seeking to deploy members of the California National Guard to the state.

Rising Conflicts

Since the former president highlighted the limited yet ongoing demonstration outside the office and made unsubstantiated allegations that the city is "war ravaged", a increasing amount of his adherents, including MAGA influencers, have appeared to face the demonstrators.

Several of these clashes have led to scuffles and brawls, leading to detentions by the local law enforcement. One influencer was among those arrested after he attempted to push through a demonstration site on a walkway near the office and was engaged in a fight over an American flag. Sortor had earlier removed the flag from a protester who was setting it on fire.

The charges against him were later dropped after an backlash in partisan press prompted the chief of the civil rights division of the Department of Justice, a department official, to threaten an investigation of the law enforcement agency over supposed political bias.

Female protesters the influencer was detained over a conflict with still face charges.

Government Statements

Recently, the state's governor, the governor, accused government personnel in the site of trying to antagonize the crowds by using disproportionate amounts of tear gas in a residential neighborhood and bringing in right-wing personalities to record the crowd from the roof of the building. "They are clearly trying to antagonize the crowds," the governor stated.

Several of those right-wing personalities were mentioned in a official record last month as "anti-protest individuals" who "constantly return and provoke the demonstrators until they are attacked or exposed to irritants" and resist "frequent warnings from officers to stay away from" the group.

Social Media Updates

Benny Johnson, a ex-reporter who transitioned as a Christian nationalist influencer after being dismissed from a media outlet for plagiarism, shared video of the secretary viewing from the upper level of the ICE facility at the small group of demonstrators below, including an individual who dons a chicken costume to taunt Donald Trump. Johnson captioned the footage of Noem observing the calm environment below: "Governor Noem faces off against radicals and a chicken-clad individual".

Despite the contrast between the allegations from Trump and Noem that this ICE field office is "under siege" from "homegrown extremists" and clear visual evidence of a limited group of protesters in harmless costumes, the personalities with Noem continued to label the protesters as harmful activists.

Meeting with Police Chief

On site, Governor Noem also held a discussion with the Portland police chief, the chief, who has been portrayed as "woke" in conservative media for authorizing his officers to detain the influencer. In a social media update on the engagement, Johnson asserted that the chief had "supported violent ANTIFA militants assaulting journalists and officers outside ICE facility".

The secretary's convoy then exited the office past a few of protesters on the exterior, including one dressed as a bear wearing a hat.
