UN Ends Penalties on President of Syria Prior to Presidential Visit
United Nations Security Council members gave the green light to a United States-backed measure to lift sanctions on Syria's leader Ahmed al-Sharaa before his presidential meeting the coming week.
He became provisional head of state subsequent to commanding a rebel offensive that removed the former president in the final month of 2024, bringing to a close thirteen long years of internal conflict.
America's diplomat to the UN Mike Waltz stated the United Nations delivered "a powerful diplomatic message" that recognised Syria was in "a fresh chapter" since Assad was deposed.
Sharaa was under United Nations restrictions while commanding the Muslim faction Hayat Tahrir al-Sham (HTS), once connected to al-Qaeda. America delisted the organization from the catalog of global extremist entities during July.
More Penalties Removed
Additionally, the United Nations lifted sanctions on Syrian Interior Minister the interior minister.
The nation's top diplomat applauded the lifting of these restrictions, stating online: "The nation shows its gratitude to Washington and allied countries for backing the Syrian nation and citizens."
Imminent Washington Talks
The Syrian leader's Washington trip at the start of the week occurs subsequent to President Trump stated the Middle Eastern president had made "good progress" working toward stability to the war-torn country.
Both presidents held discussions initially this past May, during Trump's Riyadh trip while traveling through Arab nations.
Subsequent to that discussion, America's leader characterized Sharaa as a "tough guy" with a "very strong past".
The HTS organization he led served as al-Qaeda's branch in Syria until he severed ties back in 2016.
Prior United States Journey
This week's diplomatic engagement does not represent the president's debut journey to the United States during this period. During September, he became the initial Syrian president to speak before the United Nations gathering in Manhattan after approximately sixty years.
Throughout his presentation, he declared the nation was "reclaiming its rightful place among the nations of the world" and expressed solidarity with Palestinian citizens in Gaza.
