Youth Discovered Deceased Following Untrue Allegations of Stealing Cremated Remains

A teenage youth was discovered deceased just days after being falsely blamed of taking the ashes of a dead infant during a burglary, an inquest has learned.

Tragic Discovery

Kai Lloyd's mother and father discovered his remains in his room at his Connah's Quay home on November 19th, 2021.

Untrue Accusations Start

The investigation heard how his parent received a message on 8 November 2021 via online platforms, from a individual inquiring if Kai was her offspring. The message stated: "Tell him appreciation for burgling my flat."

In a statement presented to the proceedings, the mother said the woman had been in the news, claiming her infant's ashes had been stolen in a break-in - a claim which was false.

Police Inquiry

An official inquiry from police later concluded the supposed burglary victim had "lied to police" and "it now appears that the property was never stolen in the beginning".

Media reports about the supposed taken ashes attracted online responses, and although the teenager was not identified in the posts, his mother said individuals "understood it was him".

The "online posts were extremely distressing", she said.

Emotional Wellbeing Impact

She added that Kai had been diagnosed with mild ADHD, and as part of that condition, other individuals' views really were important to him.

"It would have hurt him deeply," she said, "especially when this was not true".

Kai was detained at his residence, but no evidence was discovered. He was taken to a police station and later released under investigation.

Authorities said they would be in contact, the inquest heard, but had failed to contacted the family by the moment of his death.

Withdrawal and Worry

His mother said her son "became isolated" after the detention and "repeatedly inquired me whether I had received anything from the police", because his condition meant sometimes "certain periods could feel like much longer".

When she talked to him about the supposed incident, she said her child informed her he had entered the residence because the resident who resided there had said he could utilize the toilet anytime he needed, but denied taking anything.

Digital Bullying

In a joint statement between her and her husband, Mrs Lloyd said her son was being harassed online after the allegations.

The proceedings heard that one young adult urged the teenager to kill himself.

She had no worries on the evening before he died, explaining how she had heard him "chuckling and teasing".

She described him as a "compassionate, loving" young man, and said her "family is totally shattered".

He had been "clearly concealing his worries", she said, adding that he could not stand to have anyone "think bad of him".

Educational Reaction

The inquest received testimony from educational staff at Connah's Quay High School.

On November 8th, she "heard some boys discussing that the student had been arrested and that was the initial I heard".

"He told me... he'd done nothing wrong," she continued.

After the conversation, the educator said she rang Kai's parents' telephone and provided a voicemail saying she had communicated to Kai about the allegations.

The court heard his parents said they never got that message.

Official Finding

Lead investigator informed the hearing he would await reports regarding what enhancements had been made to handling individuals with the condition, before deciding whether he should make a avoidance of future fatalities report.

Delivering a narrative finding, he said: "Around November 8th, 2021, unsupported allegations were made against Kai Benjamin Lloyd, a 14-year-old child.

"Probably falsehoods were subsequently exaggerated and exaggerated through the platform of online networks.

"On 11 November, he was interviewed by the authorities and following his questioning he was freed while investigations proceeded."

The coroner determined: "Exists no proof that the actions or failures of any agency led to or added to his death and although it was the outcome of a self-inflicted action it is impossible to determine his intent."
